History
Long before Oakdale was an official city, it was a small community of farmers and shopkeepers. When fields couldn’t be plowed or harvested, the residents picked up their equipment and began harvesting a new natural resource: ice. Chunks of ice were cut from Tanners Lake and hauled to ice houses to be packed with sawdust. When winter ended, farmers sold the ice to locals who used it to keep their perishables chilled for weeks on end in an era before electricity. After years of steady economic growth, Oakdale became a township in 1858, but still struggled to be incorporated as a city for the next 90 years. Finally, after decades of fighting the Minnesota Municipal Commission’s claims that the area was too small to be its own city, Oakdale merged with Northdale Township to form the city that we know today.
